Swearing

People... this is a video game... video games can be frustrating... some people swear when they get frustrated, and if they happen to be chatting while they're frustrated they might drop some F-Bombs in the chat box.

I realise not everyone does this, and those who do probably don't do it often.

Still, I've been seeing a lot of people telling others to "watch the language," every time a swear is uttered.

Now, if the person in question were dropping F-bombs with every alternate sentence, I could understand the reaction, but most of the time they're just angry and they swear maybe once.

One F-bomb isn't going to kill you! You do not need to constantly remind us to tone it down! We get it, some people don't like profanity, but that doesn't mean it isn't going to happen! People get angry, and your knee-jerk reactions to every single utterence of the slightest profanities don't help.

If you really don't like it, turn on the filter, that's why its there. Otherwise, get used to the fact that sometimes people swear, and stop constantly getting on their cases when they do!

If there are children online then they (or, more likely, their parents) probably switched the filter on anyway. In fact, I'm pretty sure its on by default. If they don't have it on, then that probably means they turned it off themselves becos they don't mind the language.

I'm not saying we should be allowed to say all of Carlin's 7 Dirty Words with every sentence, I'm just asking that people stop acting like one little swear is going to make the world explode.

Actually we do need to remind people every time they swear as it's against the rules to swear in chat at all [whether the filter is on or not.]

Yes, yes, I'm well aware of that, but that doesn't mean it isn't going to happen. Obviously the designers know this, otherwise the filter wouldn't be there in the first place.

Which makes me wonder, why, if they're pretty much going to ban swear words in the first place, would they give people the option to turn the filter off?

I can see two reasons for this:

1) They may plan to have a similar swear rule system to Achaea [one of Matt's MUD's] whereby swearing in public [shouts, yells, says, city, guild] is banned but swearing in private [tells, clans, messages] is allowed provided the recipients are willing to allow it.

2) They may simply recognise that no filter is perfect and their current filter blocks things it shouldn't just because part of the word is banned, such as [filtered]y and encumberance.

I personally have never understood why people bring up games being frustrating and the need to use swear words in a text game. I mean, don't get me wrong, I swear like a sailor IRL. But there's no reason to do so when you don't know how old the people you're playing with are.

Anyway, that's not the point I'm trying to make. The point I'm trying to make is that no one is preventing anyone from swearing when something frustrating happens. I say the Fbomb six or seven times in a row everytime I die. But I don't type it. There's no need to, except to flaglarently flaunt the rules.

The thing that makes text different than voice is that sometimes words can just pop out of one's mouth in stressful situations, but the very act of having to type (not to mention the added necessity of typing /chat or clicking on a line in the textbox here in EE) means that you lose that excuse in a text based game.

I've never been so frustrated, ever, that my fingers involantarily moved themselves on my keyboard. I've never known anyone who has been. If you're dropping Fbombs in the game it's cause you want to, not because you were overcome by the moment and it slipped out.

When I tell someone to watch their language, I'm not getting on their case. I'm warning them that they could get in trouble if they continue to do it.

Well, yeah, that makes sense.

Really, I'm fine with the rules; most people know, without even needeing the rules to tell them, that profanity isn't always acceptable. But, as I said, people usually swear out of frustration, not just to be edgy or whatever; it's a sort of slip-of-the-tongue, if you will.

All I'm saying is people need to calm down; if someone swears just once, then try to ignore it. But, if the problem persists, then, by all means, say something.

its really quite simple,

just because there IS a profanity filter doesnt mean you have to make use of it

this game is aimed at a younger crowd and i have seen many situations where a initially  "harmless" emotional breakout escalates the chat to the point where the mods come in and have to mute people.

i understand it gets frustrating at times and i myself have been driven bonkers at times with rubber band, lag and non responding bounty boards.

take your hands OFF the keyboard, shout at the screen, hit the wall (or whatever may be close by, and then type.

imho using swear's in a chat program is redundant and a sign of a bad upbringing.

just my 2 cents
