Inherit The Earth: EE Precursor/Inspiration?

Back in the mid 1990s or so, I got this game called "Inherit The Earth" as a gift from a friend. It was  the full CD rom version with the voice acting. It's essentially an old school point and click graphic adventure. Anyway, the plot and details you can read about here, but the basics of it is that humanity has abandoned the planet for some reason, and left behind a variety of beast-people races to live out lives in a medieval-styled world.  Sounds a bit familiar?  Well, there are differences between EE and ITE, but the similarities are striking enough that one could imagine some of the scenarios from ITE existing in EE.

Imagine finding these in one of the dungeons:

If only we could get one working to tool around Midlands in, eh?

More screenshots here.

Now if you'll pardon me, I'll go find the quest giver to locate Orb of Storms...

Heh, good find.

The basic plot (Humanoid Animals, no humans) sounds very similar but the whole part about the fox looking for a stolen orb doesn't follow this game... unless that's a reference on what the Shroomies are looking for...

"End? No, the journey doesn't end here. Death is just another path, one that we all must take. The grey rain-curtain of this world rolls back, and all turns to silver glass, and then you see it. White shores, and beyond, a far green country under a swift sunrise." - Gandalf

I can see some similarities, too, but that's definietly more stream-lined in plot than EE is.

However, it does sound like a very interesting game. o:  A shame I haven't heard of it before just now.

Ah, this is one of the first things I noticed about Earth Eternal's setting.

Although the circumstances are different (Beasts, referred to as "Morphs" in Inherit the Earth, are made anthropomorphic and sentient by Human scientists. And Humanity, at least those not in space, are largely wiped out by what appears to be a wide-spread plague/virus, possibly, again, of Human origin.) there are similarities in how the two worlds appear and set themselves up. Especially with using popular animal stereotypes. For example, the main plot of ITE is instigated because the main character, Rif, and his girlfriend Rhene, are accused of stealing the Orb of Storms, simply because those of the "Fox tribe" are known to be "sneaky, mischievious thieves," and they were nearby when the theft was discovered.

Suprisingly, the current owners of the ITE, Wyrmkeep Entertainment (www.wyrmkeep.com/ite/), have still been keeping the game afloat, offering it on current computer platforms and even on the iPhone, as well as working on a "sequel" (Note: Said sequel has been in the works for some time now, so take that as you will).

There's also a webcomic that is continuing the story.(http://inherittheearth.net/)

And if I may be permitted, here's the opening of the game and a bit of the gameplay (I'm pretty sure both are Official. If this goes against rules I'll remove them).

Ah, this is one of the first things I noticed about Earth Eternal's setting.

Thanks for posting those additional details, Talor.

When EE first came out, the image of the three characters looking at a disrepaired Effel Tower triggered nostalgic memories of ITE.  Aside from Big Ben, the Effel Tower, the Chunnel, and the Speed Limit Sign Shield, there's really not much (yet) in the way of post-apocalyptic residuals, but they aren't exactly prevalent in ITE either. I imagine at higher level areas or expansions, we /might/ actually see more Age of Man related artifacts crop up. I can't imagine Sparkplay would pass up - especially considering the tantilizing architectures of the Chunnel - the opportunity to expose us to a dungeon with more complete trappings from the Age of Man.  :)
